I am a
student from Hong Kong applying to a university for post graduation studies in
the Engineering. My major is Civil Engineering and alternate major is Mechanical
Engineering. I would briefly like to talk about what led to me being interested
and attracted towards the field of engineering and eventually pursue it at
advance level. Firstly, my father is a Civil Engineer from university of
Houston, Texas and is very well known in Hong Kong. Also, in Hong Kong the last
decade so there has been a tremendous construction boom, which led to the
construction of many high-rise buildings. Ever since my child hood I had been
fascinated by these tall structures especially when I visited New York when I
was seven years old. Craning up my neck and looking up and above I was simply
awed by the sight of these majestical structures glaring to the humanity with
all their glorious aluminum and concrete might along with their glass covered
faces and insurmountable heights. I was particularly impressed by the Empire
State Building considering the fact that it was built in 1910 and still looked
in vogue with the trends of modern times.

I immediately decided that I wanted to be an engineer. After graduating from
High School I came over to the United States to complete my college education
and spent some time at the world-renowned Burnham Construction Co. Michigan. I
was placed there for about a year and gained invaluable experience during my
stay at Michigan. Most of the stuff that I was involved in was pretty run of the
mill but for a person who is doing every thing for the first time every little
thing held its own charm in its own unique way.
This
attitude left a positive impression on my supervisors who on completion of my
internship period immediately offered me an employment with the prestigious
company. Amongst Other things which I learned at Burnham one thing most
outstanding was the team spirit which a team on a specific project worked and
this reminded me of the good old sayings of my father who used to say that there
is no greatest virtue in a profession than being a team player and I saw this in
action at Burnham’s. The experience there complemented my studies and I was
fortunate enough to complete my graduation in time.
Lastly, I believe that the most important thing that comes with being a
professional in any field is your responsibility towards your society and
Engineering is no exception. How we construct buildings and how these will
remain after a long while is very important consideration for any engineer.
Using the right kind of materials helps ensure that we contribute towards a
safer living of the people.
