Place and Atmosphere
To Kill a Mocking Bird is Harper Lee’s award winning novel, and is narrated by
Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch who tells the story of her life from age six till
nine. She lives with her father who is a lawyer in the Alabama town of Maycomb
and her older brother Jem. She’s is boy estrous and has a very optimistic view
of life. It is set in small town Maycomb and Lee describes the town in detail
and very intricately; not a very happening town.
Central Themes
The central plot of the novel is the trail of a black man Tom Robinson who is
unjustly charged and shows how Scout’s father defends his case consistently.
Through events and incidents Lee elaborates the truths of life and the novel is
based mainly on the fact that things are not always what they seem to be in life
and first impressions that are made rapidly without thinking are mostly very
wrong. Another of the main themes of the novel is racism and prejudice and the
town of Maycomb if quite abundant with it due to its mixed community, here both
white and black live together ethnic towards each other and have an antagonistic
attitude towards each other. In the novel people who are different from others,
in minority are leading difficult lives with numerous hardships to face.
Another theme, which is quite dominant in the novel, is that of injustice and
prejudice portrayed aptly through the reference of mocking birds. Arthur (Boo)
Radley is initially shown as a recluse, but as the novel unfolds gradually the
negative traits he is associated with fade away and unravel his true personality
as kind, caring, and brave, and one finds out he is the real hero of the novel.
But the character’s true persona is revealed in the end.

One of extraordinary things about this novel that makes it quite different is
that usually novelists use a few techniques to add more color to the novel, Lee
on the other hand has made used of numerous techniques such as irony,
