Teacher-Student Sexual
Relationships Research Paper and Term Paper
In early Greek and Roman times, sexual relationships among youth and their
teachers were habitually considered to be a usual extension of a close male
bonding, together in the study of philosophy and in the teaching of warriors.
Teacher-student sexual relationships were considered repressive by many, and
this apprehension may have put in to the strong feelings concerning homosexual
behavior, even among adults, that continue to this day. Sexual relations between
pupil and teacher are a total breach of professional ethics. One cannot
effectively teach a pupil whose mind is preoccupied with the last sexual episode
with the teacher. (news.bbc.co.uk) The minority people go to college with the
purpose of falling in love with a professor. But at colleges and universities
around the country, it is moderately universal for students to have sexual
relationships with faculty members, those who learn the observable fact say.

“In the university background, the mainly recurrent focus of this exaggerated
rigid attention is consensual sexual relationships between faculty and
students”. (Barnard College Policy against Sexual Harassment in Employment
Practices and in Student Activities and Campus Life," 1998)
“Such relationships are certainly unethical, but the government has no right to
interfere with what goes on between consenting adults. People have a moral and
social obligation to stay out of relationships that are detrimental to
themselves and others, but beyond that, teachers and students should be free to
have any kind of relationship they want”. (news.bbc.co.uk)
A few such relationships will guide to marriage, but the majority of these
consensual relationships are destined from the start, experts say. Differences
in age or life experiences ultimately surface. Lots of students soon start on to
suffer subjugated by those who have power over their academic futures. The fight
from such relationships can be stern: shattered sentiments, ruined careers, and
sexual-harassment proceedings. In spite of the destruction, institutions
often cringe at addressing such matters. However, in lots of ways, the higher
education world has been out in front of K-12 schools in stipulations of
confronting the intricate issues raised by consensual sex among faculty and
students.
“As lots of officials and academics are anxious about the ethical insinuations
of faculty-student dating, others dread an assault of privacy if they endeavor
to confine such relationships among adults. Students usually want sturdy
sexual-harassment policies, yet say they are grown-up enough to make their own
verdicts”. (Gelfand, M. J., Fitzgerald, L. F., Drasgow, F.1995)
Research shows that lots of sexual encounters are instigated by female students,
still the most protected of whom are less immature than their defenders seem to
think particularly if sexual encounter is unstated to comprise gestures, dress,
evocative jokes and stories, body language, and purposeful unintended touching.
Such behavior conventionally has been implicit to be cognitively vague that
protracted gaze, that racy joke, that arm around the shoulder might be
provocations, however they as well might not be. Lately, such gestures have been
redefined by nuisance theorists as unequivocal signs of sexual curiosity, and
consequently offensive, and therefore prohibited. But to be fair, if such
proceedings are distinct as sexual offers when initiated by professors, they
must be distinct as sexual overtures when initiated by students. Back to the
1960's, sexual interface is more frequently student initiated than professor
instigates.

“Teacher-student love relationships can be burdened with pain, even for the
professor who is said to have all the authority”. (In Touch With Teens, 1995)
The elegance, proficiency, as well as power that are his in a classroom can
disperse all too simply in a bedroom, enlightening him to be somewhat inexpert,
vaguely aging, a little overweight, no longer striking to the student. In
the fall of 1997, bureaucrats banned student teacher sexual associations at
Kampt University. The restriction came as a retort to student, faculty, as well
as administrative apprehension about the former sexual harassment strategy that
dispirited, but did not prohibit sexual relationships between students and
faculty members. In 1996, the Kampt College Grievance Board for Students protest
of Sexual Harassment found Philosophy professor responsible of sexually
harassing a female. Though the student and Professor carried on a rapport for
approximately two months, it was not until three months after the association
fizzled that the student filed a complaint. The accusation board suggested that
Kampt defer the instructor’s teaching duties and discharge him at the end of the
fall semester.
The phenomenon of student teacher sexual relationship is really old and it’s
expanding day by day. In some way media is responsible for the rapid increase in
the rate of student teacher relation ship. The media exploits the affair of the
teacher-student sexual relationship, but they barely come up with the topic or
the solution for stopping such thing. In fact, they open this topic up
frequently and instead of going against it, they say it normally without showing
some negative points, and because of this, the students think that these things
are now common and there is nothing wrong in doing this. So therefore, if they
are not being told that what they are doing is not the right thing to do, so
manifestly they’ll consider it right, and instead of going against it, they
would get attracted to it.
The American Association of University Professors, which advises hundreds of
colleges and universities on their sexual-harassment strategies each year,
cautions of potential development but stops petite of recommending a ban on
consensual relationships. The strategy instead argues the implication of
unbiased evaluation of students' work by faculty, and proposes that effective
steps be taken to put off such reviews from being stained. "For many years,
people didn't unavoidably see it as a solemn problem, it is very hard to draw
the line as students live on campus and are interacting with faculty at all
hours of the day and night. They are dealing with important emotional and
personal issues as part of the learning process." (Alger, 1998)

An academic is beneath an implied obligation to promote the intellectual growth
of students. The conviction that a student puts in the academic for this reason
can be battered when the liaisons becomes sexual. But it is complex for others
to say whether belief has been abused only the student must be able to make a
protest. In many state of affairs, such as a pre-existing relationship in which
the educational and student are in diverse faculties, there is no trouble and no
grounds for objection.
"The dynamics of the teacher-student cases are often different than the classic
sexual abuse cases because they seem to involve consenting relationships between
teachers and students," said David Finkelhor, director of the Center for Crimes
Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. "... Clear
boundaries have to be enforced." (cnn.com)
Students being sexually harassed frequently either recognize or try to downplay
the understanding and contradict their feelings. Teens may tell themselves that
it cannot be significant since other people are having the same experiences;
it’s a part of school life; and it occurs all the time. Mentor a student of the
opposite sex, extra sensitivity is required to avoid the appearance of sexual
harassment. Inappropriate closeness between mentors and students will produce
personal, ethical, and legal consequences not only for the persons involved but
also for the programs or institutions of which they are part.
Adult education agencies require arranging to prevent and beneficially address
incidents of sexual harassment when they take place. To avoid it from doing so,
ignores the pessimistic consequences of harassment and invites major
institutional, and in some cases personal, liability.
