Term Paper on Strolling Gardens

 

 

Japan, the land of rising sun, besides many other wonderful things is also famous for its strolling gardens. These gardens were mostly built by Imperial aristocrats or military rulers or Shoguns. These gardens are spread on many acres of land are being used for leisure and relaxation by the Japanese. First built in the Kamakura era, these gardens reached its zenith in the Edo ear.


These gardens consist of paths and pavements of various types which are mostly made from bricks, gravel or even concrete. Trees and flowers of rich and striking colors are planted on both sides of the pavements. The paths often pass over waterways through bridges made of wood. The waterways are large enough for small boats are being used by the visitors. Natural or artificial ponds are always seen in the strolling gardens, which very often contain very beautiful and colorful fishes. Decorative tea houses in the gardens are used for the traditional Japanese tae ceremonies.
The strolling gardens are also used for artistic activities such as poetry competitions, tea

parties and moon-viewing parties. Strolling gardens offer a look at the broad face of nature and beauty. Strolling gardens were the first to incorporate the concept of Shakkie or “borrowed scenery”; using the hills, trees and sky outside the garden’s boundaries. The Ritsurin-en in Takamatsu is 7,590,000 square feet, including artificial hills and ponds.
