There
has been a widespread acceptance that the teaching in the universities must be
related to the research activities conducted by the lecturers and must enhance
the knowledge of the students concerned. In this connection on of the research
is done by Roger Lindsay. In this research, many prior views and researches have
been highlighted in perspective of the relation and importance of research
activities in the university bound, like Jenkins and many others. Also there has
been a point of consideration that the study would form a consensus between the

One critical aspect to this view is presented and is of a matter of critiques,
that there is not one but many views shared by the writer and researcher,
whereas in the introductory stage, it was explicitly mentioned that the research
would compare and contrast a previous research and a fresh research findings
conducted by the writer. Thus, in it there has been a deviation from the main
theme of the research, and no matter how much the researcher has tried to be on
the track, this one aspect has proven to be a matter if discontent with the
research and its findings.
One of the positive and more correlated aspect of the research is that it does
makes an effort to probe in to the matter of finding out the effects of teacher
research and the learning effects on the students of undergraduates and
postgraduates. The questionnaire given represents the much thought about aspect
on the matter, and it does form to be of a consequence in the sense, that it
relates to the matter. But what I perceive, and think is that the questionnaire
that is proposed and on the basis of which the research is done poses a problem.
It is the formation of the questionnaire that is under question. The structured,
unstructured, and middle of the road format of the questionnaire makes not only
the researcher feel on the middle of the road but also the participants of the
research. If the questionnaire design would have been much defined and to the
point, it would have been a better event. Also the researcher would not have
confused the participants. Also the researcher has made the questionnaire in an
unsystematic way, like the open ended question “do you know anything about any
of your lecturer’s research?” and then there is the closed ended question like
“Research might have impinged upon you through:” and then the next question is
the open ended question like, “Did you find your contact with academic research
valuable?” This asymmetry may have lead to a situation where the focus group
participants would have thought and felt confused, no matter they be the
supplementary or the initiator or the prompt. As, in this connection, the
methodology was the probing in by the focus group of 4-6 students; the use of
questionnaire and its knowledge to the participants does not give a fair chance
to speak up regarding the matter.

As I have criticized above, the research instead of comparing the previous and
the new research on the perception of undergraduates and the postgraduates,
tries to probe in to the matter itself, notwithstanding the objective of the
research. It would have been a better written dissertation if the literature
material that was put to review has been well outlined in the introductory
paragraph, thus making it easier for the reader to contemplate the exact meaning
of the text. Further, with regard to the literature review, it is too short for
the reader to form a concise view on the subject. Thus, it should have been
elaborated further by the researcher, as there is ample room for it, thereby
making it easy for the reader and the intended audience of the research to fully
make out the issue at hand.
One of the commendable this in the research is the irrelevance of the focus
group facilitators from the focus group, thereby decreasing the intended or
unintended bias by the teachers. But on the other hand it would have been much
better if the facilitators were only the research assistants not related to the
students, because one way or the other, the lecturers would have been involved
in the research activities in the university and may in a sense lead the focus
group discussions according to their own perception. Therefor, it should be
noted that the facilitators must be made as much non-responsive of the
discussion as possible. Of course, there must be a guiding hand, and that be the
facilitator. Another this that I noted in the research article is that there is
not aspect that the rapport was initiated and created among the focus group.
This was a very important aspect of the research, without the rapport, the focus
group would have felt uneasiness to begin with the discussion. And even if they
would have some haw managed to start the discussion, there would have been
initial deadlocks at many times, that may be greater that anticipated by the
researcher. If this were not the case, the article has missed the point of
mentioning the whole situation that must have been mentioned.
