Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
The
human race has entered an era that demands the individual and the society to be
ultra dynamic to keep a balance in the pace of social progress and the
individual achievements. In today’s materialistic world the emotions of the
individual are left ignored in the pursuit of worldly gains. Thus causing
dissatisfaction and breakdowns in relationships and society.
This disappointed feeling results from the basic human desire of achieving
success and balance in all areas of life but unfortunately it becomes a cause of
depression and emotional stress thus bringing down the actual efficiency of the
individual.
Dr. Albert Ellis developed rational Emotive Behavior Theory, RBT, in 1955 as a
tool for coping such life difficulties through a scientific, present-focused and
active treatment.
He pinpointed the human tendency of expanding the practical problem into an
emotional disorder. REBT has been found to be an effective tool for treating
emotional disturbances through a set of simple rules:
1. Taking responsibility for ones own actions,
2. Believing that the harmful emotions and dysfunctional behavior stems from
irrational thinking,
3. Understanding realistic views and making them a part of yourself,
4. A reality-based perspective will lead to deeper acceptance of self and more
gratified life.
REBT follows certain steps to save one from being a victim of one’s
circumstances. The tenets are the famous ABC’s
A. Activating event, circumstances
B. Irrational Belief (resultant of A)
C. Consequence, emotional and behavioral due to faulty belief of A
The therapy works towards:
D. Disputing the faulty components
E. Effective new thinking
F. New Feeling
RBT is helpful in getting rid of the demands from self, others and the universe
(relationships etc.) as it provides effective tools to identify and overcome the
source of disturbances in one’s life and be in control of your circumstances and
the emotional effects.
