Adolescence is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood. These are
formative years when the maximum physical, psychological and behavioral changes
take place. These years are also a time of preparation for undertaking greater
responsibilities, a time of exploration and widening horizons, and a time to
ensure healthy, all round development. There are approximately 1.5 billion young
people including adolescents (10-24 years) worldwide. An approach by the young
people towards adulthood in responsible and strategic manner constitutes
Positive adolescent behavior. This includes keeping a balance between the pace
of social development and personal development and rationalizing the life
activities.
According to the study of Commonwealth Department of family and community
services, family members play the most effective role in positive behavior
development in young people. Adolescents who are found to have positive behavior
are more likely to belong to supportive and affectionate families. Thus families
have a major role to play in rearing a child and getting him through the
adolescent period and stabilize him as an adult through parental support and
effective communication.
According to the study of 'Young workers' work values, attitudes, and behaviors'
(Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology; Leicester; Nov 2001) it
is evident that there is shift in the role- allocation of the young people they
see themselves as more responsible and want to stand on their own feet. This
constitutes a positive shift in the adolescent psychology and behavior as it not
only effects the physical and mental development but also spiritual advancement.
According to the findings of the above-mentioned study the positive influence of
early employment of adolescence breads many significant like attributes, social,
mental, sexual, and personal responsibility.

Dr Uton Muchtar Rafei's research for SEAR countries indicates that negative
community norms and environment, such as smoking by elders; peer examples of
problem behaviour; low sense of family or community attachment, and inadequate
laws for controlling drug abuse and crime, often spur negative behaviors.
However, there also are positive environments, which protect the youth from
negative influences. These include family cohesion and harmony; sense of
belonging and caring; involvement and achievement in school, improved
socioeconomic status of the family, and employment opportunities for young
people. Other positive environments include opportunities to contribute to the
community through involvement in community and civic organizations; to adequate
schooling, and to ensure economic security, which evidently stands true.
A study by Paul Saunders on Adventure Based Challenge programme shows that such
activities have been helpful in promoting and breading positive sign in
adolescent and deviant behavior. It carries much weight that social outdoor
activities help to instigate self-responsible attitude among people in a very
indirect manner but with far-reaching effects and this maybe a very productive
way of breading positive behavioral changes among adolescents. It may be safely
concluded that positive adolescent behavior is a result of effective family,
considerable freedom, a proportional balance in life activities and constructive
spiritual development to be able to absorb the positive influences from the
society and environment.
