Movie Review Term Paper - The
Matrix
‘The Matrix’ is about a computer hacker, Neo (Keanu Reeves), who becomes the
rescuer of a world, taken over by intelligent machines, which were initially
created by man. In the Matrix, Neo works at Meta-Cortex, a computer software
company and his actual name is Thomas A. Anderson. There are many flaws in the
movie. One of the bad characteristics of science fiction is the use of a
fundamental premise that is totally unscientific. It is one thing against
physical laws, e.g. to allow faster-than-light movement to make a story. One
important thing is that humans do not produce any kind of energy; we, like all
organisms, just consume energy in endothermic processes.
I liked this movie just because the idea of the matrix is something new. I do
not think anything else shown in the movie is likely to happen. I mean, if
humans were able to create machines having artificial intelligence and could
think for them selves instead of depending upon us, I think they could find a
better energy source than human bodies. In the movie, all humans are shown in
comas and they are placed in tubes that supposedly extract the energy from human
body. Even if machines were able to do this, why would they want to put all
humans in the matrix? Also, I think if the machines were so advanced, that they
would be able to totally remove any possibility of resistance.
Neo and his friends are out to save the world and the imprisoned humans from
machines. If this is true, then why Mouse (Son of Morpheus), when he was
trapped, pulled out two machine guns and started firing at deceived and innocent
people, instead of giving up, and dying as a martyr. The same case is with Neo
and Trinity. When they storm the building they were out to save these innocent
people instead they prefer to blow them with a variety of advanced guns. The
Matrix lacks one important principle that makes a great movie that is great
writing. I only liked the idea. In the middle of the film Laurence Fishburne as
Morpheus goes through a lot of discussion with Neo to tell him about the Matrix.
This fits into the category of “exposition”, a major problem with script
writing. It would have been much better if Neo involved in more drama while
actually figuring out what actually is the Matrix.
As far as special effects are concerned, the Matrix is a top-notch movie. The
film's audio and visual effects are really stunning. After watching this movie
you will be doubtlessly struck by the flashiness of the movie. However, the
concept is that of an ostentatious computer game with magnificent special
effects but lacking a strong script.
