Free Term Paper on Moralists and Modernizers by Steven Mintz

Introduction
This book is focused on producing for the reader a detailed account of the US history and the roles that various individuals and institutions have played in developing the current state of affairs. The author himself proclaims to have a mission, which is to forward an education to teach students to think "fourth-dimensionally": to understand that every aspect of life has a history, and that our very values, institutions, and identities are a product of historical processes. The author is convinced that history, more than any other field, reveals human nature in its full complexity and has immense power to teach about the way that power, evil, yes, and idealism too, function in society.

Based on the above mindset the author has recently written a book, which will be the key feature of this report. The author in his book has covered a variety of topics and has arranged them in such a manner that the thoughts flow in an orderly and logical manner. The author has started his work by highlighting the significance of the current social structure. It is with great concern that the significance of the current social structure, or rather the lack of any has finally become visible to the American population. The greatest problems on the current social structure are highlighted in the book and therefore help in developing the mind frame of the reader in understanding the developments that take place throughout the book. The author has then proceeded towards the topic of the future and the emerging millennium. This he has done so as to highlight the importance of the future and the key role that the situation in the current surrounding will play in developing the future. Therefore what the author has effectively done is bring into focus how extremely dependant we are in determining our future on our present and past. The important issue that is raised here is the fact that the current social structure that will play a key role in the emerging future is determined by a hoist of institutions. These institutions can be broadly divided into the following categories:
o The modernist
o The moralists

Traditionally the two have been seen as antagonists as the modernists have purported to bring into practice a life style that is abhorrent to the moralists. The traditional comforts of the flesh, non-compliance with the social codes of behavior set by the society and a disregard for practiced and withheld principles has obviously irked the moralist as they hold all these values crucial to their survival and importance in the society. These two schools of thought have been at odds with each other since time immemorial. However what the world has been witness to and has also seen emerging over the years is a constant victory of the modernists over the moralists. What then follows is that the society moves towards rapid disarray, which is in line with material progress and wealth. This wealth that is so rapid to accumulate and which has greatly buoyed that society often also leads to a fundamental social breakdown of the family structure. This is often viewed as a start of the deterioration of the society.

Another important point that is to be seen in books similar to the one under review is the importance of deterioration of family structure as this often foretells of the destruction of the society. Many nations before have come into power and perished.
I believe that in the writing of the text the author has been fairly neutral. What he has done is highlight the importance of building a mortal fabric of the society so that the society can progress and develop itself. It should be noted that the importance of this couldn’t in any way be diminished or reduced. The key thrust of the book is to point towards a need for a balance d approach towards the future so that the nation does nit fall into oblivion like many before it. To some the text of the book may seem biased in favor of the moralists, however that is not the case, a critical analysis of the book would show that the author is well versed in his field and therefore is representing a less purported but nevertheless correct view point.
