I. Feeling Nervous
It is most natural for human beings to feel nervous when starting something new
especially if is challenging and exciting in the long run and something that
means a lot to you that you just don’t want to lack behind and fail in it.
a. Unsure Of How You Will Do
The first feeling is of uncertainty that come in the way. Lack of knowledge of
skills, watching professional players and lack of stamina creates a feeling that
one may never be able to play efficiently.
b. A Long Time Since You’ve Tried Anything Like This
The excitement and adventure of a sport like Tennis is not found in everyday
life. It takes lots of energy and one has to be alert and active all the time,
so it’s not an easy task to put up with the early training sessions.
II. Afraid that you may fail
Sometimes the excitement of then game is taken over by the fear of not doing
well. The feeling that one faces at this stage is:
a. Will you be able to pass this class?
The fear of loosing or lagging behind is very destructive. One needs to get over
the fear and develop the sportsman spirit and face all the challenges
optimistically. This positive outlook helps in getting over the fear of passing
rather failing the class.
b. Feeling Of Reluctance
One feels reluctant despite having the drive and spirit to learn. This attitude
kills the enthusiasm and adds to one’s fear and inefficiency. Learning the game
should be approached with a positive and broad outlook. Hitting against the wall
is the best way get hold of the basics, like holding the racquet, basic serves,
hitting back etc. One must know that it takes time to get acquainted with
various styles and that watching and playing Tennis are two ends of the world.
III. Things begin to move in the right direction
Once the positive attitude is developed, it becomes easier to understand and
adopt the techniques and styles of playing Tennis.
a. Not as difficult as you thought
The first impression of ‘a difficult game’ vanishes away as one gets into the
stride. It starts getting easier and more exciting as the player develops the
feeling of confidence and takes up the challenge.
b. The More You Practice The Better You Get
Practice makes a player perfect but only regular in professional training will
get one to the top. As the practice takes pace the reluctance and fear are
replaced by a renewed enthusiasm and a desire to be perfect in the game.
