Term Paper on European Union And The Political Parties

The Britain always has had a mixed relationship with the rest of EU. EU is of one opinion whereas Britain has its own agendas usually on every matter be it the introduction of Euro, which Britain had distanced itself away while the rest of EU members gleamed over their achievement. On one hand Britain wants to retain its nationalistic identity in place and on the other hand it eyes itself as the protagonist in the affairs of EU advocating a more integrated Europe. This paper aims to look at the view both pro-European and anti European of the two major political parties of Great Britain, the Labor Party and the Conservative Party.
Since 1997, Tony Blair’s Labor Party has held sway over the British people largely due to its commitment to the voters in reforming of the public sector bodies and making beauracracy work for the common man. Its historic sweep in elections of 1997 and again in 2001 is reflective of the fact that the party has succeeded in fulfilling the desires of the people to a great extent and whereas it may lack on some fronts, it has gained on other fronts and those too which the public at large perceives to be important enough to warrant for a change.

The Labor Party has always been strongly in support of EU and integration with EU was one of the main factors in bringing Tony Blair to power. The Conservatives had always been reluctant to openly vouch for the support o Britain joining other Euro front runners France and Germany and take lead in bringing a more pro-active European stance in front of the British people. Both the parties are worlds apart as far as their Euro policies are concerned

Different Views Of The Two Parties
The paper will now discuss the views of the two political parties regarding the future of European Union. As the perspectives of these two parties are very much different from each other therefore this difference of views is also reflected in the speeches and suggestions, which the leaders of these parties make. The latest reports on the future of European Union presented the views on the future of the European Union. As can be reflected in the statement made by Lady Thatcher “Lady Thatcher had described the EU in her forthcoming book Statecraft, as "fundamentally unreformable" and argued that Britain should negotiate its way out of the Common Agricultural Policy and EU foreign and defense policy - suggestions which her critics see as steps towards a complete withdrawal.”

Lady Thatcher belongs to the labor party she was continuously insisting to develop and refine the policies of European Union. She argued that the Britain should negotiate on the broad issues such as Common Agricultural policy, European Union Defense policy and the foreign policy. Lady Thatcher was severely criticized by the leaders of her own party as well as the policy makers condemned the suggestions. On the other hand the leaders of the conservative party showed complete silence when Thatcher was presenting her views on the policies and issues of European Union.  “Nevertheless, the Conservative Party, the world's oldest party, which over the last two centuries has held power more years than any party in the world, including most of the 20th century, could govern”

The conservative leaders have the power and the ability to govern a country. As the previous studies showed that these leaders possess dynamic personalities with good governing skills. The leaders of the conservative party define the future of European Union .The statement made by the conservative leaders on the future of European Union can be summed up: “The EU is not a no-committal debating society with little say and no influence. Its members have already surrendered a substantial part of their sovereignty; Reform of EU institutions must not deny a small country, such as Denmark, influence on all-important decisions alongside larger states, such as France and Germany.” The conservative leaders constantly insist that the reforms, which will be made by the authorities of the European Union, should include countries such as Denmark, France and Germany. The conservative leaders believe that if these countries will be taken into consideration by the European Union than a broader perspective and greater advantage can be gained by the standards of European Union.

Changing Views Of The Two Parties
Both the conservative and labor [party have changed their views on the European Union and they have refined the issues which have to be involved in the policies of European Union. Since the establishment of European Union the issues have been continuously changed and evaluated. The labor parties insist to include Agricultural policies, Educational reforms in the objectives f the European Union where as the conservative party leaders insist to include and take into consideration small countries also. They have their own views, which states that European Union is not only made for larger countries but small countries should

The Results And The Conclusions
Both these parties are effectively involved to present their views the leaders of these parties observe the development or backwardness of the European Union from their own point of view. The policy makers should consider the views of both the political parties and if they think that the European Union will achieve greater success than they should include their advices in the policy of European Union. The leaders of both the conservative and labor party insist that the policies of European Union should be designed according to the advices given by them. The leaders believe that the future of the European Union will be better enhanced if their advices will be implemented. “In the decades ahead, an ever expanding and evolving European Union (EU) will be facing numerous challenges from within as well as outside its borders.”
